Atari's retro logo has remained since the 70's
Today, Atari EU have announced plans to introduce 3 new gaming franchises into the market in 2009 and to complete the long awaited fourth title in the Roller Coaster Tycoon series.
This surprise move comes after months of uncertainty for the future of the company. Atari is without doubt the most significant company in the short history of video games to date. It is argued that Atari single handedly started the video game revolution, creating both the home entertainment and arcade industry.
Not long after its banner year in 1980, Atari registered $536 million in losses for 1983. Hence their slippery decline into economic instability - a fact not helped by the growing popularity of Nintendo's Famicom (Nes) and the mounting unpopularity of arcade culture. Recently, the concerns for the company's future have been reignited.
In 2003, Infogrames Interactive adopted the ATARI brand, effectively changing the name of the entire company to Atari. Earlier this year, Infogrames completed the take-over.
The new Atari, under the direction of Phil Harrison (Of Sony Playstation fame) and Infogrames are finally announcing plans to expand it's line of games.
Although details have not yet been given, Atari has plans to introduce 3 brand new franchises. The first of these is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2009 (Q2) with the other two being released in Q4.
Atari also gave details of the long awaited sequel to Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 which was released in 2004. Although two expansion packs have been released since, when questioned Atari would insist that there were no plans to expand the franchise. The first two titles in the series were developed by Chris Sawyer who has been in a legal battle with Atari for years regarding the series. This resulted in Atari paying Mr Sawyer an undisclosed amount of royalties. This figure is estimated to be more than £10 million.
An Atari spokesperson had this to say about the news of the new Tycoon title "We're very pleased to announce that we have a new RCT title in the works, it's been a very long time since the last one [Wild Expansion] which would have led to atleast one more expansion but the legal issues meant that this was no longer a possibility. We're really putting a lot into this one, the most commonly requested feature from our fans is to have the content from previous games work on new games so we are very proud that the sequel supports all the previous rides, and scenery from RCT3". The new game is planned for Q3 2009.
Atari plans to reveal more details about Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 and the other franchises in coming weeks.
